Branding for small businesses
< back to projectsHomer Creative is a brand consultancy with imagination that really takes notice of who you are and what you do.
When Adam Kershaw, a fabulous Kent-based sculptor/maker, with a special concern for working with reclaimed materials, wanted to develop and sharpen his brand identity he asked us to get involved. We were particularly excited by Adam’s techniques of working in wood and metal and how that might be reflected in Adam's identity, marketing information and website.
We came up with a simple and elegant artist's mark based on Adam's initials that could be produced in wood, metal and paper using carving, stamping, sand blasting and embossing techniques; something spare but with lots of possibilities.
And Adam loved it. He said, "I can see myself using this mark for the rest of my career." And he immediately set about carving out the mark into large blocks of wood to use as a sign outside his studio.
Specialists in driver training for HGVs and airport vehicles, CDS Training, wanted a complete rebrand. We developed a strong, bold identity that drivers could recognise, with a resonant sector-related colour scheme. This was rolled out into publicity and course information materials and a web site. In finding a look that was just right for them, we had to source images of transatlantic motorways and the flip them round so everyone was driving on the correct side of the road for this country. That's the kind of detail our designers are obsessed with getting right!
Finally The Hearth Centre who use educational and professional theatre expertise to provide their clients with arts based stimulus, which they use for raising awareness around issues, especially in health and public services. This can take the form of specially commissioned theatre pieces, plays touring with workshops, Forum Theatre techniques and a lot more. Add to that creative writing training and the development of facilitator-led reading groups and their business was both very specific and also providing multiple services to organisations and communities.
We were delighted when they approached us for ideas on a brand refresh. They wanted to keep costs down but needed to strengthen their identity. They also needed something quickly. So we worked with the same identity colours they already had but chose a specific shade that would work well in printed matter. We then tweaked it typographically and gave some added thought to the spacing and shape of the name.
We also took part in a discussion with the client to reframe the key message of the company and jointly we produced a new strap line that reflected their passion and professionalism: "Change through the arts". So what they then had was something simple and elegant with an instant and powerful impact. That has pleased them and us.
These are three examples of our approach to small business, our attention to detail and care about what we are helping them to communicate and our grasp of the realities of keeping within budgets.
