IF bursts out
< back to projectsA relationship with Steve Bell and his cartoons that spans over thirty years
In 2010 Homer Creative designed Steve Bell's latest book, taken from his Guardian strips and illustrations, after a gap of four years and published by Jonathan Cape. As usual Brian Homer got involved with the copywriting for the backboard blurb and helped edit quotes that appear throughout the book.
It was a challenge to design and art work not least because after four years there was a lot to catch up on, but we all enjoyed reacquainting ourselves with his output since 2006. Sue Race said, "It was a cool thing to be working on as the election and its aftermath were happening around that time. It totally hits the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned. Steve gets funnier. And it was good to see how caricatures develop over time - David Cameron changed from a sausage to a transparent condom before our very eyes."
Brian Homer added, "It"s a real compendium of British and World Politics and doubles as a handy doorstop".
We have produced all of Steve's cartoon books over the years, as well as two collaborations between Steve Bell and Brian Homer: Waiting for the Upturn and Tony Blair's Little Red Book (which we designed in blue). Indeed the rumour is that Brian gave Steve his first big break - an unpaid job cartooning for Broadside, the What's On and News Magazine for Birmingham in the 70s. His response to the wealth of opportunity goes unrecorded.
